Description:
Recognizing the effect domestic violence has on children, the Beacon Center has based its !Hugs & Love! children!s program on providing a non-threatening environment in which children grow and thrive. With the parent/guardian's permission, assessments are conducted on all children who enter the shelter program, to assist with evaluating their needs for services and to screen for possible child abuse and/or neglect. The children!s advocate works individually as well as in group settings with the children from the shelter. The !Hugs & Love! Children!s Center provides childcare while mothers attend education sessions and support groups. The program has a strong emphasis on teaching children how to survive in a violent home and alternatives to violent behaviors.
Program Eligibility: The !Hugs & Love! Children!s Center is for children ages 0-17 that are residents of the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. shelter
To Access the Program: The shelter parent/guardian will be informed of how to access the program during case management sessions.
Location: The Domestic Abuse Council, Inc.!s Emergency Shelter Program.
Duration: Length of service is dependent on the time the family spends in the shelter.
Cost: There are no fees for the !Hugs & Love! Children!s Center.

Description
Hugs and Love Violence-Free Education and Prevention school-based program works to stop the cycle of violence by teaching alternative behavior. Designed for third and fifth grade students in Volusia County public elementary schools.
